Leigh House

Leigh House provides short to Mid-stay accommodation for women with mental health needs. The supportive atmosphere of the house helps residents learn how they can cope with or overcome many of their difficulties. It also aims to enable them to live independently.

Accommodation Services
This large and comfortable terraced house is conveniently situated close to the City centre. The house consists of five fully furnished single bedrooms. Residents share the well equipped kitchen, living room, bathrooms and laundry facilities. Visitors are welcome during the day.

The Staff Team
There is a full time Team Leader who manages a team of Support Workers and occasional Relief Workers. The project is staffed between 8am and 7pm during the week with reduced cover at weekends and Bank Holidays.

Support Services
The role of the worker is to offer practical and emotional support to assist residents in developing skills needed to live independently. A key-working system is in operation and involves action plans being devised with the resident and reviewed regularly. The scheme also offers group sessions which focus on cooking, art and crafts and complementary therapies. Support Services also include help with money management, shopping and accessing facilities and resources to widen social support in the community. The purpose of support services is to promote self development, giving women an opportunity to work towards personal goals. Workers liaise closely with other mental health professionals and voluntary organisations.

Referral Process
Referrals can come from any source. A social work needs assessment is required when ever possible. Referrals can be made either direct to the project or through Social Services. A visit will be made by two workers to assess the individual needs of each women referred to Leigh House. Before a final decision is made, the prospective resident is invited to visit and then spend a couple of days at the project before deciding whether to live at Leigh House.

Moving On
Assistance is given to residents in finding suitable and appropriate move on accommodation. Residents are offered help in completing housing application forms, liaison with housing providers, visits to prospective tenancies and applying for furniture grants. In conjunction with other agencies involved, Leigh House workers will support the residents in their new tenancy following their move from the scheme. Ex-residents are welcome to drop into Leigh House for a chat and a cup of tea and are encouraged to keep in touch with each other
